Climate Change Exacerbates the Environmental Impacts of Agriculture

Authors: Yi Yang, David Tilman, Zhenong Jin, Pete Smith, Christopher B. Barrett, Yong-Guan Zhu, Jennifer Burney, Paolo D’Odorico, Peter Fantke, Joe Fargione, Jacques C. Finlay, Maria Cristina Rulli, Lindsey Sloat, Kees Jan van Groenigen, Paul C. West, Lewis Ziska, Anna M. Michalak, the Clim-Ag Team, and David B. Lobell

Science, 6 Sep 2024, Vol 385, Issue 6713, DOI: 10.1126/science.adn3747

Modern agriculture has a large environmental impact and this is expected to get worse as the population grows. Climate change will make these problems worse. It will reduce crop yields, make pesticides less effective, and increase pest outbreaks. This will lead to more land clearing and more pollution. Agriculture is also a major source of greenhouse gases and climate change will make this worse. We need to find ways to make agriculture more sustainable and climate-friendly. This will require investment in new technologies and practices.

Dialysis Opens a New Pathway for High-Salinity Organic Wastewater Treatment

This research investigates dialysis as a novel method for treating high-salinity organic wastewaters. Unlike conventional methods, dialysis utilizes an ultrafiltration membrane in a countercurrent flow to separate salts from organic matter without diluting the wastewater. The study demonstrates dialysis’s high salt/organic selectivity and exceptional fouling resistance, making it a promising and sustainable alternative for treating challenging high-salinity waste streams.
